Triple P - Positive Parenting Program
Who is the course for?

  • Is your child constantly misbehaving?
  • Is your family life being affected by his or her behaviour?
  • Do you dread going out because of your child's current behaviour?
  • Are you going through divorce?
  • Have you been court-ordered to attend a Triple P Parenting Course?

OR

  • Are you going through divorce or separation and have been court ordered to attend a parenting course?

OR

  • You may have a few concerns about your child’s behaviour – perhaps there’s constant disobedience, bedtime troubles or he/she is hurting others
  • You simply want to find out how to set up better routines for mealtimes or bedtimes.

If this sounds familiar, then Triple P can help.

Group Triple P gives you support to help you manage your child’s behaviour for the long term and prevent the kinds of problems that make your family life stressful.

What is Group Triple P?

Group Triple P is a broad-based parenting intervention for parents of children up to 12 years old who are interested in learning a variety of parenting skills.

You may be interested in promoting your child’s development and potential or you may have concerns about your child’s behavioural problems.

The program involves four (2 hour) group sessions of up to 12 parents.

You will actively participate in a range of exercises to learn about the causes of child behaviour problems, setting specific goals, and using strategies to promote child development, manage misbehaviour and plan for high-risk situations.

Then there are three (15 to 30 minute) individual telephone consultations to assist you with independent problem solving while you are practicing the skills at home.

What happens at the sessions?

From the start, you’ll be given tips and suggestions to fit the needs of your family.

You’ll see scenes from the Every Parent’s Survival Guide DVD, which show you how the ideas work in real life. And your workbook will give you the tools and information you need to start positive parenting right away at home.

I will guide you every step of the way and even provide backup phone support as you put your new skills into practice.

How long is the course and how many parents will be attending

There are usually about 8 parents in a group session. You will spend about eight hours with your group.

The course will run over over two consecutive Saturdays from 9:30am - 13:30 and then back the following Saturday from 9:30 - 13:30.  The week's break in between is for you to be able to put some of the techniques we learn into practice back at home.

After the weekend session, I will then check on you by phone consultation a total of 3 times to see how you're getting.  The calls last 30 mins.

What is covered in sessions with parents?

Session 1: Positive parenting. This session provides you with an introduction to what is positive parenting, why children behave as they do and how to set goals for change. You submit a completed assessment booklet at the beginning of this session.

Session 2: Helping children develop. During this session, the practitioner discusses how to develop good relationships with children, how to encourage good behaviour, and the four strategies for how you can teach your children new skills and behaviours.

Session 3: Managing misbehaviour. I offer additional strategies to assist you with managing misbehaviour during this session. You will also learn to develop parenting routines to promote compliance and manage non-compliance from your children. You will have an opportunity to rehearse these routines during the session.

Session 4: Planning ahead. This session covers family survival tips, identifying high-risk situations that still cause concern, how to develop planning ahead routines to promote good child behaviour in high risk situations (e.g., shopping, learning how to take turns, fighting with siblings, getting ready for school). You also prepare for you telephone consultations during this session.

Session 5-7: Using positive parenting strategies 1-3. During the telephone consultation I provide feedback from initial assessments that you completed and then help you review your implementation of planning ahead routines for your high-risk situations. From this, you will set goals for further refinement of your routines, if needed.

What resources do you receive?

Each family receives a copy of the Every Parent’s Group Workbook. This workbook provides you with the content of all sessions, space to complete written exercises and an outline of all homework tasks.
