Description

Teacher Insight Event on Bioinformatics

CCEA have organised a Teacher Insight Event on Bioinformatics entitled “Computers and Cancer Doctors” which will be hosted by Queen’s University Belfast in the Health Sciences Building at Belfast City Hospital on Tuesday 26 February 2019 from 4.00 pm - 6.00 pm.

Intended Audience

This event is aimed at Key Stage 3, 4 and 5 teachers in the following subject areas: Careers and STEM subjects (Biology, Computer Science, SSD, Using Technology, Maths and Statistics). One teacher per subject area is invited to attend.

Context

Bioinformatics is a very new and cutting-edge discipline which combines biology, computer science, information engineering, mathematics and statistics to analyse and interpret biological data.

The level of awareness of this in the public domain is currently very limited and this is an excellent opportunity to inform teachers about the subject and the significance in terms of future opportunities for research, study and employment.

Purpose of the session

  • To provide an opportunity for teachers to discover more about what Bioinformatics entails and how it will be used to revolutionise application of STEM in the future.
  • To develop teachers’ understanding of potential opportunities for young people in the area of Science.
  • To upskill teachers in terms of this new area of science and its applications to health and society both now and in the future.

During the Visit

  • Welcome by Professor Chris Scott, Director, Centre for Cancer Research and Cell Biology.
  • Interactive medical bioinformatics science activity, led by Dr Ian Overton, senior lecturer in The School of Medicine, Dentistry and Biomedical Sciences.
  • Discussion and networking with refreshments.
