Event description

Description

On 26th October 2017, the University of Edinburgh's Tower Block UK Project is running a free research morning at the North Lanarkshire Heritage Centre in Motherwell with a focus on post-war social housing and local history. Led by local archivist Wiebke McGhee (CultureNL) and researcher Diane Watters (Historic Environment Scotland), you can take part in a series of sessions which will give an overview of the national and local history of post-war social housing and introduce you to the tools and sources available for carrying out your own future research.

The morning will include an tour of the North Lanarkshire archives during which you will have the opportunity to browse some of their collection materials relating to post-war development. The group will then travel to nearby Cumbernauld where Diane, who grew up in the town, will lead an architectural-historical walk taking in the site of some of the last tower blocks (which were demolished earlier this year) as well as Cumbernauld’s other notable architecture including the town centre megastructure and some of its earliest low-rise housing in Seafar.

The day is free and open to everyone although places are limited. Free transport will be provided between Motherwell and Cumbernauld (and back if required) and lunch will also be available. If you can't make the whole day there is also an option to join us in Cumbernauld for the walk only. Those attending for the walk only should meet at Cumbernauld train station at 13.00.

Tower Block UK is creating an interactive record of Britain’s multi-storey public housing with the aim of documenting every tower block built including those that have already been demolished. The project is being run by the University of Edinburgh with funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund to help digitise photographs and support local outreach initiatives which encourage high-rise residents to tell their stories, and aid them in telling community histories.
