We are excited to welcome Helen Taylor, senior associate at Woods Bagot, and Rachel Cooper, associate at Arup, to take us through the structural and architectural complexities of The Londoner Hotel.

Due to open later this year, The Londoner is a landmark new hotel in one of the city’s most popular locations, Leicester Square. Set to become a prestigious destination in its own right, it will include 350 guest rooms, multiple bars and restaurants, a 1,000-capacity ballroom, conference and meeting facilities, a spa and swimming pool, and an Odeon complex all under one roof.

All this functionality on one historic and constrained city centre site has meant The Londoner has one of the deepest habitable basements in the world – a huge architectural and structural challenge.

Art and design also come together in the form of The Londoner’s beautifully crafted facade. A faceted ultramarine blue faience skin made up of 30 different mosaic patterns and 15,000 hand-made terracotta tiles was designed in collaboration with artist Ian Monroe. To precisely fit each tile together, the design team utilised advanced BIM technology, giving a contemporary feel to a traditional artisanal material.

Registration is free but spaces are limited.
