Event description
People living with dementia are a growing part of our community. Helping them to use your business or service will benefit everyone.

About this Event

POSTPONED

Given the emerging Coronavirus situation, we have postponed the planned launch of Calderdale Dementia Friendly Community on 22nd April. We intend to reschedule this important event as soon as it is possible.

OPPORTUNITIES FOR BUSINESSES AND SERVICE PROVIDERS

People living with dementia face barriers in accessing services, transport, pubs, restaurants, shops, cultural and leisure venues etc. These barriers reduce or stop them from visiting services and businesses.

Businesses are missing out on income they could generate from providing goods and services to this group of customers not just from those living in Calderdale but also from neighbouring communities:

• 80% of people with dementia listed shopping as their favourite activity.

• 83% of people with memory problems have switched their shopping habits to places that are more accessible.

Local groups are not utilising people living with dementia and their friends, families and carers as volunteers and missing out on their skills and expertise.

In the majority of cases, very simple and inexpensive changes will make these environments welcoming to people living with dementia, their friends, families and carers.

Given that the number of people living with dementia is continuing to rise; there’s a real opportunity to make Calderdale the destination for shopping, eating, drinking and leisure for people living with dementia, their friends, families and carers.

WHY FOCUS ON DEMENTIA

1 in 14 people over 65 and 1 in 6 over 80 will develop dementia.

In Calderdale, there are now almost 3000 people with diagnosed dementia – and this figure is growing all the time. Add to that the army of friends, families and carers, and you can see the scale of the effects of dementia locally.

Dementia is not just about losing your memory. Dementia can affect perception, communication, orientation, motor skills and much more.

WHY WE NEED CALDERDALE DEMENTIA FRIENDLY COMMUNITY

CDFC set up to encourage the development of dementia-friendly initiatives throughout Calderdale. There are already lots of good practice, and CDFC vision is to make the good the norm and develop Calderdale as a dementia-friendly community (a place where dementia is understood, and people affected by dementia are supported to participate in community life).

To learn more about how we will drive our agenda to make Calderdale more dementia-friendly, please join us at this event.
