Mobile and iPad/Tablet News Apps: A Bold New World For Publishers or More Platform Competition?
Just as with mobile phones, iPads and tablets are yet another form that publishers need to have a strategy for, and yet, it’s hard to know what business models should be applied, what to offer in their own apps, and whether to work with news reader / aggregator apps or try to shut them down. What extent do apps represent a threat or an untapped opportunity? As with any nascent platform, uncertainty abounds.
Publishers such as Huffington Post and NPR believe that apps provide them incremental readership, while the New York Times and BBC have watched carefully at who is trying to distribute their content and usurp their own apps. And what of the business models around these apps? Do in-app subs offer publishers a way to charge for their content, or will readers, used to free on the internet, find their news elsewhere.
Finally, what does the rise of aggregator news apps like Flipboard, Zite and Taptu where news can be customised or tailored just for the reader mean for publishers?
