Session 1:Are you sitting TOO comfortably… for your health?

Speaker:Professor John Buckley

Overview: This presentation provides an historical overview of the changes in workplace physical activity (inactivity!) and how it is now being clearly linked with the world’s leading causes of poor health and early death from diabetes and cardiovascular disease. As part of this it aims to put the possible ways of reducing sedentary time at work within the whole context of daily activity and exercise as recommend by the government.

Presenter Bio: Prof John Buckley has worked in the area of physical activity and cardiovascular health nearing 30 years. For 21 years of this he ran his own private exercise and physiotherapy business, which specialised in cardiovascular health and rehabilitation. This work also included a number of NHS contracts of running programmes and managing services at the Royal Shrewsbury and Stoke Hospitals. His academic teaching and research career has paralleled this front-line practice, with 17 years in the Physiotherapy School at Keele University, 9 years at the University of Chester, and the past 2 years as part of developing a bespoke University Centre in Shrewsbury. He has published in many international journals, written 2 books and many chapters in national and international guidelines on exericse in health and rehabilitation. His latest chapter is featured in the new International Olympic Committee’s Manual of Sports Cardiology. He has served as President of the British Association for Cardiovascular Prevention and Rehabilitation and Founding Chair of the International Council of Cardiovascular Prevention and Rehabilitation, including being a member of the World Health Organisations 2030 Rehabilitation Advisory Panel.

Session 4: Why sitting won’t actually kill you

Speaker: David Kirtley

Overview: David will be looking at some of the most up-to-date research on office chairs and looking at why, despite all the recent media hype, sitting doesn’t have to be ‘the new smoking’. The talk will cover some of the most important features of a chair from a health perspective, and explore the idea that spending money on office seating is an investment and NOT a bottom-line cost.

Presenter Bio: David is our Seating Consultant and resident ergonomic office chair expert at Posturite. With his in-depth knowledge and vast experience over 16 years, he is perfectly placed to support clients through the important chair selection process. For the past two years David has been the driving force behind our active working campaigns, encouraging businesses to take care of the health, happiness and wellbeing of their employees in a more holistic way. It all starts with the equipment we use, and David’s job is to make sure it’s as appropriate and well-matched to each unique business as possible.
