Event description

Description

Tallie Maughan, Founder, Turning Earth

Turning Earth is an open-access ceramics studio that opened in East London in 2013. The first of its kind in the U.K., it has since grown to serve over 300 members and 300 students every month across two different sites.

Turning Earth aims to plug some of the gaps in provision that are holding back participation in ceramics in the UK: it offers affordable workspace and facilities, provides beginners’ making classes and technicians’ studio management training, and creates artistic community for people who would otherwise work alone.

Previously a business consultant in the field of corporate social responsibility, Tallie first came across the makerspace model while taking a career break in Southern California. Brought up by a keen amateur maker, she had developed her own craft through community college courses in London and was interested in progressing in her practice without committing to a full-time career. After becoming a touring theatre manager, she travelled across the US using these spaces in several cities, studying the model in detail before returning to the UK to launch her own version.

In her talk, Tallie explores the concept of the makerspace and how this model can enable more people to participate in craft. She lays out a compelling vision for a future in which places like these exist in each urban centre, and suggests how our society can benefit as a result – with the emergence of a new kind of community hub and the development of a modern form of sustainable cottage industry.

Tallie will share the steps she took to open Turning Earth and some innovative methods that the organisation has developed to solve common challenges.
