About this event

  • 6 hours

My name is Helen McCormick and I'm a local artist and qualified art teacher. I've been creating objects from clay for over 26 years, and I still absolutely love the process. I am passionate about teaching and have created this workshop to share my skills, knowledge and experience with anyone who would like to have a go for the first time or to develop their skills further.

My taster day is designed for complete beginners or for those who have some experience of using clay, but feel they would like to improve their skills. During the morning you will learn traditional hand-building techniques such as making pinch pots, and then learn how to coil on top of a pinch pot to enlarge the form. In the afternoon you will learn how to apply coloured decorating slips to your work and creating surface pattern/decoration through sgraffito/carving techniques.

No experience necessary.

All materials and equipment will be provided. Tea and Coffee will be available throughout the day. The only thing you need to bring is a packed lunch and an apron or wear old clothes. If you can trim your nails before hand that would be helpful as you will be handling soft clay.

After the workshop, I will carefully take your beautiful pot home and fire it in my kiln. Your pot will be glazed using a transparent glaze. Your sculpture will be ready to collect approximately in 4-6 weeks after the workshop. I will let you know a date and time for collection once they have been fired.

There is FREE parking at the Walronds. The carpark is located at the back of the building. To access the carpark you will need to turn up Tiverton Road off the High Street, and then turn left just before the fire station onto Shortlands Lane. It is a narrow lane and easily missed. Drive a few yards up the lane and you will see the sign for the carpark on the left. Turn left and follow the drive through the gate ahead. Here is a link to Google Maps which should take you right to the carpark entrance. https://goo.gl/maps/JKfioUFi3FCSnCHJ9
