Power and Power Mapping

Power and Power Mapping

By Act Build Change
Online event

Overview

Develop your understanding of power and how to use it effectively in organising.

Building relational power is one of the foundations of community organising. Having a clear definition of power, and learning how to unpack it, helps us build power that wins real change.

In this workshop, you will:

  • Learn how power relates to community organising.
  • Engage with your peers on understanding power.
  • Practise power mapping to help you think about how to organise.

Meet the facilitators

Ariel Whitson is the Director of Organising and has over a decade of experience as a community organiser focused on social justice issues, primarily with environmental and land justice. Before joining Act Build Change, she was the Senior Director of Community Organising and Education at TreePeople, a leading Los Angeles-based NGO, where she led a team of 40 organisers and educators supporting communities impacted by climate change and environmental injustice. Prior to TreePeople, she ran major advocacy campaigns at Ten Strands, securing significant legislative and funding victories for climate literacy. Ariel is passionate about healing the violent separation of land and people through organising.

Paul Amuzie is the London Community Organiser at New Economics Foundation and the founder of Br8ke The Silence. For 13 years Paul organised as part of Citizens UK, working to build lasting relationships and alliances between schools, universities, faith institutions and trade unions, that foster community power. Paul’s leadership is marked by empathy, resilience, and a profound belief in the transformative power of open dialogue. Paul holds a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) from The University of Birmingham.
