About this Event

Course Structure

This is a practical course split into several sessions. Each session will start will a quick introduction and objectives, followed by a short demo, then most time is for guided exercises. Attendees will be provided with a step-by-step set of instructions and a worked solution in case they get stuck.

Each session will use a different dataset so attendees have lots of variety and because datasets differ a great deal and require different techniques to extract value from them. They are drawn from health, economics, finance. During the sessions, we may look at the sales and revenue of a trading company, how much people in different countries drink – and how long they live; investigate why passengers survived or perished on the Titanic; analyse the text of a BBC News article; visualise the risk and revenue of a (fictitious) bank.

There will be eight people or fewer on the course so that the trainer can give individual attention to delegates.

Trainer

Mark Wilcock is a trainer and consultant in data analysis and visualisation. In 2019, he trained over 600 people in 50 different training in places from Docklands to Dubai. He runs a popular community analytics meetup, London Business Analytics Group.

Content

The course will teach the following

  • Import data from common sources (CSV, Excel, databases and other sources).
  • Clean and transform data – replace or remove bad values, filter the rows, group, summarise, pivot and unpivot data, calculate results
  • Model data; create relationships between datasets, create hierarchies and groups
  • Calculate useful quantities e.g. sums, averages, rolling sums, year-to-date values.
  • Build helpful and insightful visuals; bar charts, line charts, scatter plots, matrix and table visuals, maps, bullet charts and others plots; choose how one visual affect others (as a filter, highlight)
  • Explore and explain data: drill to detail, show data, add basic analytics (averages, trends, clusters, reference lines)
  • Use slicers, parameters and other methods to explain the data and help your audience draw insight
  • Tell stories with data; use bookmarks, spotlight, create drill-though pages, use parameters
  • Improve and polish reports: add text, images and other non-data elements to enhance the report; apply conditional formatting e.g. data bars; configure titles, axes, colours, labels; design for a phone / mobile device
  • Discussion of best practices; guidelines and examples
  • Distribute and share content with colleagues or with the world
