Following the success of the Overhead Line Colloquium in March 2018, EA Technology and its industry partners are pleased to announce their first Power Cables Colloquium. Cable monitoring, fault detection, installation and design considerations with HV Cables has never been more important to owners and operators of these high value critical assets.


The event is aimed at tackling some of the major issues currently under discussion within the industry relating to power cables (HV and above). The Colloquium will offer the chance to network with industry specialists and gain valuable insight and understanding into today’s cable challenges as well as contributing to the discussions.


Experts, within their field, have been brought together to share knowledge and experience on specific topics including the latest technical innovations, condition assessment techniques, delivery of major projects, cable management and health and safety.


EA Technology welcomes participants to this power cables technical seminar day. Please come along to support, offer your insight or highlight relevant experiences within this sector.

An Innovative Approach to Power Cable Bonding System Design.

Cable bonding is a fundamental issue when considering HV cable systems.  Cable system designers face a variety of issues including changes in section lengths, narrowing of distance between double circuits.  These issues have to be considered carefully in any sizing calculations due to the potential circulating currents present in HV metallic cable sheaths which can cause overheating.  Discussing these challenges, this presentation will also look at a tool which will enable optimization of cable sizing which was recently presented at the 2018 CIGRE conference.

European regulation requirements for cable fire performance

New regulations governing the sale and use of power cables in construction and civil engineering structures came into force across the EU on the 1st July 2017. Enacted under the Construction Products Regulation (CPR), cables are now required to comply with a range of fire and fire-resistant testing protocols. Manufacturers, Importers and Distributors of cables carry the responsibility for ensuring these tests are adhered to.


The monitoring of critical supply cables – a case study

Any unplanned outage of a critical supply cable can result in a significant loss of revenue and a degree of attention that most maintenance and operational personnel would prefer not to have.  Permanent, 24/7 monitoring of partial discharge (often a pre-cursor to failure) provides one technique for avoiding potential outages before they occur.  This presentation shows how the installation of an on-line HV cable monitoring system can prevent outages caused by unexpected failures and can also be used to pro-actively manage cables exhibiting partial discharge until such time as remedial action can be performed in a planned and controlled manner.


Dealing with complex cable repairs in service - a case study

When the sub-marine cable feeding the Isles of Scilly was severely damaged by an unidentifed boat more than 10 miles from land, the Chief Engineer tasked with dealing with the situation will present an overview of the cable, it's history, the difficulty of assessing its condition in service, and how his team worked through the complex and challenging repairs.
