Event description

Description

2018 has been a year of struggle. University staff took part in the largest strike in UK higher education history, fighting for fair pensions. Communities and anti-fracking campaigners have been resisting at the frontline of fossil fuel extraction. Over 100 women in Yarls Wood detention centre went on hunger strike to protest inhumane conditions of migrants in detention.

In all of these struggles, students have played a crucial role of solidarity - standing shoulder to shoulder with their lecturers, putting their bodies on the line to stop fracking and fasting in support of detainees.

Students have also been organising in response to the complicity of universities in injustice. They’ve pushed over 60 universities divest from fossil fuels, persuaded more than 50 institutions to take action on sweatshops in their supply chains, and taken action to decolonise their universities - from the curriculum to links with the border industry.

All of these struggles are responding to the dominant political and economic forces of our time. Over the last decade, we’ve seen governments and elites push cuts to public services, welfare support and education. We’ve also seen racist rhetoric and policies leading to the creation of a “hostile environment” for migrants, and the expansion of fossil fuel extraction internationally which would lock us into a future of runaway climate change.

But as we’ve seen, students have the power to fight back against this. Power Shift - Training for Change is your opportunity to learn how.

Over the 5 days of this participatory training you will:

Organise to win! Get the tools you need to channel your passion to fight injustice.

Join a network of student organisers! Get to know and learn from some of the most inspiring student organisers across Europe.

Explore the root causes of local and global injustice! It’s only by tackling the root cause of an issue that we will create lasting change.

Shape national campaigns! Feed into our national campaign strategy for our Sweatshop Free and Undoing Borders.

COST: £42 (including food for 5 days) and only if you’re an Early Bird and get your ticket by Friday 1 June, after that it’s £50.
