About this event

Who is this for?

The Powerful Pause series has been developed for compassionate changemakers - people with bold ideas that can change our world in big or small ways. This includes:

  • Researchers who want to make a difference
  • Leaders who are changing the way things are done
  • People developers who are supporting others to thrive
  • Parents who want to thrive at work without it costing too much.

If you are not sure if this is for you, please get in touch. What you do is not as important as why you do it.

Why do this course?

We have a huge body of research showing the remarkable relationship between self-compassion and resilience. We know that when we practice self-compassion we reduce stress, anxiety and self-criticism and increase our optimism, confidence and resilience. This means we can overcome setbacks, set healthy boundaries and focus on the work we need to do in the world.

In this three-part course, you will set yourself up for true resilience by developing the strong roots of self-compassion. You will:

  • Develop calm strength that sustains you and others through difficult times
  • Find courageous ways to set boundaries for yourself and others so that you strengthen relationships and reduce overwhelm
  • Shift your own mindset so that you see self-compassion as a source of strength, not weakness
  • Commit to a self-compassion practice that actually works for you and sustains you through challenging situations
  • Take away resources you can draw on time and time again.

How does it work?

This is a warm and supportive group coaching programme that has evolved from established programmes at University College London and University of Oxford. It draws on a strong evidence-base to give you three powerful pause points:

Pause one: your compassionate foundation (1030-1300 Monday 19 September 2022)

In the first session you will learn more about self-compassion and choose just one thing to establish your self-compassion practice for the year ahead.

Pause two: your compassionate boundaries (1030-1300 Monday 10 October 2022)

In the second session you will learn about fierce self-compassion and commit to one action that you will take to restore healthy boundaries.

Pause three: your capacity to bounce back (1000-1300 Monday 31 October or Monday 7 November 2022)

In this final group coaching session you will find space and support to reflect on your capacity to respond and adapt to challenges that emerge.

The maximum group size is 8. For Pause three: your capacity to bounce back, we work in two smaller groups (maximum 4) on either 31 October or 7 November. If you have a date preference, let us know when you book.

What have others said?

Here's how previous participants describe the programme:

"This programme came at just the right time for me. I was going through a challenging period of overwhelm and needed to pause and reflect. This programme enabled that time, and helped me to rebuild my personal resilience. I have worked hard on being compassionate to myself and setting realistic goals and healthy boundaries."
"This programme is exactly the powerful pause it says it would be. It brought together like-minded powerful people who want to work on ways to be more effective leaders, without it taking its toll on them as individuals. I came away feeling empowered and more confident in my own abilities and what I have to offer - and I definitely plan to stay part of this important community."
"This has been the most useful cpd course I've been on for a while, I think because we not only explored self-compassion and resilience, but also the reasons we don't practice what we know to be helpful. The programme is a perfect blend of theory, grounding, conversation and group coaching."
"Thank you Kate for a truly impactful and life affirming programme. I've loved it."
