Event description

Description

Around 600 million people in Africa today do not have access to electricity. Where they do, there is often a discrepancy between rural and urban access, and existing supplies are often inadequate to meet needs. Solutions to this gap are fundamentally important to economic growth and modernisation. Natural gas is a popular option, particularly given recent discoveries in the Rovuma basin indicating potential for further discoveries; it is also attractive as the cleanest of the fossil fuels when burned.

Yet, there is opportunity for massive innovation, both in energy production and distribution methods. Across the continent there is great potential for the use of renewable energy sources, estimated over 8 terawatts from solar power alone, and over 100 gigawatts from hydroelectric solutions just in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Increasingly, people are turning to off-grid and independent power producers in place of underdeveloped utilities, indicating space for new innovative solutions for delivering electricity to disparate communities.

Thank you to our hosts Slaughter and May.
