Composer David Haines first created Powers of Ten in 1999, inspired by the classic 1977 film of the same name. The debut performance at Dawlish Leisure Centre wove together existing and newly composed songs to chart a journey from the human scale down to the sub-atomic, then back up through the cosmic, before finally returning to the beach.

Since then, the work has been performed at venues across Devon and beyond – from Teignmouth’s Carlton Theatre and Sidmouth’s Manor Pavilion to Cambridge, Massachusetts, where it featured in MIT’s striking Stata Center, and as the opening event of the inaugural USA Science and Engineering Festival in Washington DC on the perfectly-chosen date of 10.10.10.

Over the years, Haines has expanded the song cycle with many new choral songs, enough to divide the adventure into two separate arcs: a descent into the microscopic, and an ascent into the vastness of space. This year’s concert follows the upward path through magnitudes, with a return to the downward journey planned for next year.

The performance will be narrated by Dan Hagan, who – aged just ten – was one of the original narrators in 1999. Now a teacher, musician, and father, Dan recalls: “Powers of Ten is such a big memory from my childhood.”
