Event Details

Parr's Priory Rowing Club is looking for eager beginners to come and Learn to Row with us.

Over the course of six weeks, you'll learn the basics of rowing in our bespoke rowing tank, on our rowing machines and, of course, on the River Thames.

Many people who take part in the course go on to join our club as full members. Previous attendees of this course have gone on to row at Women's Henley Regatta and win various regattas in the following summer season.

Absolutely no experience is necessary - we can handle nerves and poor levels of fitness, and we've not had anyone fall in yet in the many years we've been running the course!

FAQs

Is there an age limit for the course?

Unfortunately, we can't take juniors in our club at the moment, so participants need to be over 18.

What format does the course take?

Over the six weeks you will be given instruction on the basics of rowing in our erg (rowing machine) room and tank. Most of your training will take place on the river Thames, boating from Barn Elms boathouse in Putney.

When are the sessions?

The training sessions will take place every Saturday for six weeks, from 11am until around 1pm.

What kind of boats are used?

We use three sweep-rigged 'eights' - the same type of boats that you would see in the University Boat Race.

How does the coaching take place?

You will be coached off the water by our experienced coaches and club members. On the water, you'll be coached by your cox, who is in the boat with you, as well as a separate coach who will be alongside you in a launch boat.

What happens when the six weeks are over?

If you wish to, you will have the option to become a full member of the club.

What are my transport/parking options getting to the club?

The boathouse is situated on the towpath, opposite Fulham FC. There is limited parking on Putney Embankment (it's a short walk to the club), and also at Barn Elms Sports Centre.

What should I bring with me?

Clothes suitable for rowing, a towel, wellies (if you have them - we have a stock that you can use, but prepare for them to smell like the river!), spare socks and a water bottle. Leave valuables at home if you can - there is a limited number of lockers at the club which take a £1 coin (which is returned). PPRC will not take any responsibility for items lost or stolen on the course.

What if I can't make all six sessions?

The number of sessions you attend is up to you, however, the course must be paid for in full. We recommend that to get the most out of the course, beginners should be able to attend four or more out of the six sessions.

I have another question which isn't covered...

Please contact the club and we will be happy to answer it for you!

Parr's Priory Rowing Club

Parr's Priory Rowing Club is a small and friendly club located on the Tideway. We currently row out of Barn Elms Boathouse and we are happy to take on complete novices, priding ourselves on being the only Thames club who runs a regatta solely for people who've never rowed before.
