About this event

Marketing and associated aspects like PR underpin how a business targets, communicates and sells its product or service. Marketing incorporates a very wide range of activities, covering a lot of ground. To assist you in this important area, we at BIPC Bristol offer two streams of help.

Marketing essentials

These sessions look at the basics: a what and why of Marketing using the outline tools from the Business Canvas as our starting point, including:

  • A focus on uncovering the core marketing aspects of your business idea
  • How does marketing fit into a business plan?
  • Exploring the core Business canvas elements relevant to your business
  • Segments
  • Value proposition
  • Customer relationship
  • Channels
  • Aside from these core aspects, where appropriate we will touch competitor analysis and using a SWOT.

Marketing for start-ups

These session are run by our Marketing Expert in Residence - Elizabeth Blake and covers the how on marketing including:

  • Developing your company mission, vision and values
  • Advising on the ideal look and feel for your branding
  • Identifying your ideal customer to target- Website design/ SEO
  • Social media and the appropriate use of it for your business
  • Development of a pitch story and supporting pitch deck

The marketing essentials sessions are delivered by BIPC business information specialists.

Your session will last for about 60 minutes. Sessions are available on multiple dates and multiple times.

We can offer one-to-one sessions by Zoom if you prefer, please book your time slot here on Eventbrite and email bipc@bristol.gov.uk to ask for your appointment to be held over Zoom.


In advance of the meeting we will send out a brief questionnaire so that you can tell us some background information on your business idea, to help us tailor the session and to confirm your business details or pre-start plans.

All of our support is fully funded and is therefore free to access.

It is a requirement of our funding body that we record every organised interaction with pre-start and start-up businesses at BIPC Bristol. Please therefore take a few moments to provide us with the relevant information needed so we may provide our service.

The sessions are held in Central Library in our purpose-built Business and Intellectual Property Centre.

All sessions provided by BIPC Bristol are free of charge for residents and businesses based in Bristol and the surrounding area.

Following the meeting, the Business & IP Centre will send you a link to a feedback form that helps us monitor and improve our events.

What is your refund policy?

Our events are free, but places are limited and events are usually oversubscribed. Please give two working days’ notice via email if you wish to cancel.

Can I attend if I'm not a member of the library?

Absolutely! Any Bristol based business or person with a business idea is welcome. Though we always recommend joining the library as it's free and will make accessing our databases, books and publications much easier.
