Practical Archival Skills Training: Introduction to International Records

Practical Archival Skills Training: Introduction to International Records

By The National Archives: for academic and research communities
Online event

Overview

This half-day online workshop is designed to support researchers who are interested in working with international records.

At The National Archives you can access records that were once working documents, used to communicate between the British government in London and colonial administrations, and diplomatic missions overseas. Our collections offer unique scope in global history from the perspective of the British government, however, many of these records are not easy to find via keyword searches in our catalogue. Efficient research requires developing an understanding of former bureaucratic practices, the structure of government, and how these have impacted the organisation of the archive today.

This workshop will guide you through practical tasks that provide insight into how to begin research in our collections effectively. This includes:

  • Tips and tricks for using our online catalogue, Discovery, effectively
  • Insight into the ways in which records at The National Archives mirror the structures and activities of government departments
  • Overview of some key document types
  • Exploring what research into international collections can currently be carried out online (without visiting our reading rooms)

This workshop is part of The National Archives PAST (Practical Archival Skills Training) programme. The session has been designed for researchers and practitioners in any field who are interested in British colonial, imperial or diplomatic history. Participation is open to those who have never worked with archives before, as well as those who have previous experience but wish to improve their research skills and understanding of the collections.

Please note: those who are intending to research using international collections in our reading rooms at Kew might benefit from our extended workshops.

The extended workshops include:
