Overview

A technical talk on the construction of heavy civils reinforced concrete structures.

Glenn Boyd and Martin Montgomery are presenting their experiences of the construction of heavy civils reinforced concrete structures various of flagship assets on HS2 between Buckinghamshire and Warwickshire.

The presentation will first take a reflective learning approach by Martin on reinforced concrete designs from insitu pours to specialist precast elements to promote best practice concrete design and detailing for those structural and civil engineers in the design offices.

Martin will then be followed by Glenn Boyd who will discuss the current gaps in knowledge in the concrete conformity and identity testing codes in the British Standards suite as well as the impact of concrete material variability on key design parameters.

Speakers:

Glenn Boyd is a Fellow of both the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) and the Chartered Institution of Highways and Transportation (CIHT) in addition to being a Chartered Member of the Institution of Civil Engineers (MICE, CEng). With over 35 years of experience in the construction industry, Glenn currently serves as a Technical Director at Arcadis, leading the Construction Services arm within Highways UK. He is also the Head of Construction Assurance on HS2, the UK’s flagship high-speed rail project. Glenn’s passion for construction—particularly concrete—has been long recognised; it’s often said that while some people like perfume, Glenn prefers concrete. This enthusiasm has led him to pursue a Doctoral Thesis focusing on precast concrete manufacturing in the UK, further cementing his expertise in the field.

Martin Montgomery is a Chartered Structural Engineer with over a decade of experience in both the design office and site roles. His career began in steelwork fabrication design for the oil & gas offshore industry including lifting & rigging which laid the foundation for his move to onshore tackling complex temporary works, demolition, bridge design and refurbishment including various CAT III checking roles on long-span viaducts. For the last 3 years Martin has performed both a resident engineer and technical advisory roles for the contractor on HS2 in both the NCA and G2S regions.
