Practical Diabetes

1 day RCGP accredited workshop

Liverpool CCG has commissioned this one day workshop for all registered nurses working in Liverpool’s GP practices.

This workshop will take a ‘back to basics’ approach to the assessment and management of Type 2 Diabetes and, as such, will be suitable for primary care based health care professionals involved in the assessment and management of Type 2 Diabetes.

Workshop Aim

This workshop aims to provide you with the basic knowledge and skills required to promote safe and effective practice in the assessment and management of persons diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes and who are not being treated with GLP-1 mimetics and/or insulin.

Workshop Objectives

At the end of this workshop you will be better able to:

• Differentiate between Type 1 and Type 2 Diabetes

• Describe insulin secretion and action

• Discuss the relationship between obesity and Type 2 Diabetes

• Explain what is meant by ‘insulin insensitivity’ and ‘insulin deficiency’

• Explain what is meant by HbA1c

• Define what is meant by the term ‘hypoglycaemia’

• Form an association between hyperglycaemia, hyperlipidaemia, hyperinsulinemia, oxidative stress and blood vessel dysfunction

• List the micro and macro vascular complications associated with Type 2 Diabetes

• Explain how CVD risk is assessed and managed in Type 2 Diabetes

• Discuss national guideline therapy recommendations for the lowering of blood glucose levels

• Define Diabetic Ketoacidosis

Blood Glucose Management in Type 2 Diabetes:

• The HbA1c test explained

• NICE Guideline Recommendations

The Pharmacology of Type 2 Diabetes – a brief overview:

• Metformin

• Sulfonylureas

• Thiazolidinediones

• GLP-1 Agonists

• DPP-4 Inhibitors

• SGLT-2 Inhibitors

The Clinical Assessment of Type 2 Diabetes in Primary Care

• A systems risk assessment

• Case Studies

This one day event will take place on THURSDAY 29th JUNE 2017 9am – 4pm.
