Practical ECG & Capnography for Veterinary Anaesthesia

Practical ECG & Capnography for Veterinary Anaesthesia

By Swift Referrals

Overview

Join Andy Tunley RVN for a practical CPD session refreshing ECG and capnography skills, with real cases and tips to enhance anaesthetic safe

With 18 years of experience in the veterinary industry, Andy qualified as a Registered Veterinary Nurse in 2013 after training at a busy first-opinion hospital in Leeds. He then spent five years working as a locum, gaining wide-ranging experience across independent practices, hospitals, charities, and referral centres. In 2019, he took a full-time position at a surgical referral centre in Leeds, where he refined his clinical skills, with a particular focus on anaesthesia.

Since 2021, Andy has worked in veterinary education, training student nurses on both degree and diploma pathways. He finds teaching immensely rewarding and has been recognised for his contribution with a teaching award in 2025.

This one‑hour CPD session provides Veterinary Nurses with a focused and practical refresher on two essential monitoring tools in small animal anaesthesia: the electrocardiogram (ECG) and capnography. Designed to build confidence and sharpen interpretive skills, the session combines a concise review of physiology with real‑world application.

We will begin by revisiting the fundamentals of cardiac electrical conduction and carbon dioxide production, transport, and elimination. Understanding these physiological processes is key to interpreting the waveforms generated by ECG and capnography equipment. From there, we will explore the most common patterns and abnormalities, highlighting how to distinguish genuine clinical changes from artefacts and technical issues.

The emphasis throughout will be on pragmatic, real‑world tips that RVNs can immediately apply in practice. Case‑based examples will encourage interactive discussion, allowing delegates to test their knowledge and problem‑solve in scenarios that mirror daily anaesthetic monitoring.

By the end of the session, attendees will have refreshed their theoretical knowledge, strengthened their practical interpretation skills, and gained strategies to enhance patient safety during anaesthesia.
