Practical Geography - For Home Educated Children
Overview
Practical Geography day for home educated children, led by experienced outdoor practitioners.
This tailored day supports the Key Stage 2 Curriculum and is suitable for ages 7 - 12.
The best way to learn is through hands-on experiences. Bring the curriculum to life and develop practical life skills with our Streams and Orienteering activties:
- Explore a stream system as you learn about the features and processes of rivers and streams.
- Carry out scientific investigations; bringing together geography, maths and science.
- Create a field sketch and cross-section diagram.
- Learn how to use a map and compass to navigate.
- Follow our fun orienteering trail to test your skills (in Epping Forest).
Learning Objectives
- Understand processes and terminology relating to rivers and streams.
- Undertake practical field work: measuring the profile and speed of a stream meander.
- Develop evaluation skills by assessing methods.
- Build understanding of the water cycle and the impacts of human land use and climate change.
- Learn how to use a map and compass effectively to navigate.
- Develop problem solving and team working skills.
- (Plus, exercise and fun in the great outdoors!)
Important details:
Time: 10am-3pm (with 30 minute lunch and 15 minute snack break)
Cost: £30 for first child (including parking).
£25 per additional child (select 'add-on' at check out).
Location: The Hive, Church Road, High Beach, Loughton, IG10 4AJ
* All children must be accompanied and supervised by a parent / carer throughout.
Younger siblings are welcome but must be supervised by parent / carer. It should be noted that the orienteering course may be tiring for very young children. All children participating in the main activities will require a ticket, but those just following along can attend free (e.g. babies and toddlers).
