Event Details

This course is a practical hands-on introduction to R for business professionals. It will help you get started with R and use it productively. It has a strong emphasis on solving typical challenges in business applications.

Who Should Attend
This course is for business professionals who have some responsibility for analysis or reporting and want to gain more insight more easily from their data.

Course Objectives
By the end of the course, participants will be able to use R to load, clean, tidy, visualise and transform data, to calculate results, gain insight and generate high quality reports and visualisations.

Prerequisites

  • Participants will need to bring their own laptop.  Any modern laptop will do – 4Gb RAM memory minimum.  Either PC or Mac.
  • Software: R and RStudio – latest versions.  These are both free.  Participants will receive joining instructions before the course with exact details and there will be help before the course if needed.
  • No previous knowledge of R is required to join the course.

Timetable
The course lasts 2 full days.  The format will be 25% lecture, 25% demo and 50% hands-on exercises. We'll use a variety of public datasets, drawn from the areas of finance, economics and health in the demos and exercises.

 Day 1

09:00: Introduction to the course, getting started with R

10:00: break, opportunity for individual Q&A

10:15: Load data from flat files, Excel spreadsheets and databases into R; first steps at analysis

11:15: break

11:30: Explore and visualise data – build our first charts

12:30 lunch (provided)

13:30: Clean and tidy data e.g. handle bad and missing values, strange formats…

14:30: break

14:45: Transform data [part 1] – select, filter & sort

15:45: break

16:00: Transform data [part 2] – group, summarise, aggregate & calculate

17:00 finish

 Day 2

08:00 [optional] Continental Breakfast (provided)

09:00: Recap of the previous day. Sources of publicly available data and how to retrieve them.

10:00: break, opportunity for individual Q&A

10:15: Export and save data to CSV, Excel and databases.  Basic reporting.

11:15: break

11:30: Use R with Power BI and Tableau

12:30 lunch (provided)

13:30: Improve visualisations with themes, labels, colour palettes, facets.

14:30: break

14:45: Introduction to text analytics

15:45: break

16:00: “Whetting your appetite” lecture session - Introduction to more advanced and powerful capabilities in R including predictive modelling, text analytics, calling web services, scraping data from web pages, analysing financial time-series applications, using R with big data

Mark Wilcock is an independent consultant specialising in the analysis, reporting and visualisation of data.  He is a Microsoft MVP (Most Valuable Professional) on the Data Platform. He holds a MA in Natural Sciences from Cambridge and a MBA from Imperial College, London. He has worked on data projects, including several recently implemented in R, at clients including Credit Suisse, Nomura and BNP Paribas.  He has presented on data science, data visualisation and R at several conferences in London, Europe and the US the last few years.  He is the organiser of London Business Analytics Groups, a popular meetup.
