A FULL DAY PRACTICAL UPDATE FOR DENTAL HYGIENISTS, HYGIENE THERAPISTS AND DENTAL NURSES QUALIFIED TO TAKE RADIOGRAPHS WHO WISH TO IMPROVE THE QUALITY OF THEIR IMAGES

Speaker: Barbara Lamb - Specialist Senior Radiographer

Study Day Aim and Brief Description

The morning will consist of a number of presentations and discussion in relation to technique including:

Paralleling technique

Bisecting angle technique

Panoramic technique

The afternoon will involve a mix of equipment led demonstration and hands on demonstration with participants being encouraged to put into practice that which is being explained to them by positioning on phantom heads and a live model.

Objectives/Learning Outcomes: by the end of the day the participants will:

1 Be more confident in dealing with patients presenting technical radiographic challenges

2 Identify common faults of positioning and ways in which they can be prevented

3 Identify techniques to improve patients’ tolerance of film holders

4 Have more understanding of how to dose limit to their patients using beam aiming devices and a collimated beam when using paralleling technique.

5 Be able to use bisecting angle technique as an alternative to paralleling technique when imaging larger areas where high quality imaging of pathology is needed.

6 Identify correct patient positioning and beam angulations for intra oral radiography

7 Demonstrate techniques to meet the challenges of obtaining good radiographs in children, elderly and those with special needs

8 Have an understanding of the different types of digital systems available and how to overcome practical issues when working with them

9 Be able to utilise daily Quality Assurance (QA) procedures to identify excellent radiographic image quality .

General discussion with participants on problem areas when taking intra and extra oral radiographs

11.15 Problem solving with a phantom head as a patient

12.30 Lunch

13.30 Practical use of techniques used in practice

Instruction on paralleling and bisecting angle technique

Panoramic positioning will also be covered

Positioning on phantom, live model and when positioning

in panoramic machine, participants will position on each other
