Online Workshop
Systematic Review & Meta-Analysis in Medical Research
📅 Dates: 31-8-2025 to 10-9-2025
🕘 Time: 9:00 AM – 11:00 AM (Online, via Zoom)
9:00 – 9:10 AM | Introduction & Conceptual Overview
- What is Evidence-Based Medicine (EBM)
- Why systematic reviews & meta-analyses are crucial in medical research
- Stepwise workflow: from idea → search → analysis → publication
9:10 – 9:25 AM | Step 1: Research Question & Protocol (Theory + Practice)
- Theory: Formulating a focused research question using PICOS
- Practice: Draft your own research question
- Theory: Protocol registration (PRISMA checklist, PROSPERO)
- Practice: Quick demo of PROSPERO registration
9:25 – 9:40 AM | Step 2: Literature Search (Theory + Practice)
- Theory: Building an effective search strategy (keywords, Boolean operators, filters)
- Practice: Live search demo in PubMed and Cochrane; export references
- Theory: Screening & managing references efficiently
9:40 – 9:55 AM | Step 3: Screening & Study Selection (Theory + Practice)
- Theory: Inclusion/exclusion criteria, avoiding bias
- Practice: Screen a sample dataset in Rayyan or Covidence (title/abstract)
9:55 – 10:15 AM | Step 4: Data Extraction & Risk of Bias (Theory + Practice)
- Theory: Key data points, standardized extraction, risk of bias tools (Cochrane RoB, Newcastle-Ottawa)
- Practice: Fill a sample extraction table and assess bias for 2–3 studies
10:15 – 10:35 AM | Step 5: Meta-Analysis & Visualization (Theory + Practice)
- Theory: Effect size calculation, heterogeneity, forest plots, subgroup analysis
- Practice: Input sample data into RevMan or JASP → generate forest plot
- Theory: Interpreting results, detecting publication bias
10:35 – 10:50 AM | Step 6: Reporting & Publishing (Theory + Practice)
- Theory: Structuring the manuscript according to PRISMA
- Practice: Draft a short result summary from your sample meta-analysis
- Tips for journal selection and submission
10:50 – 11:00 AM | Wrap-Up & Q&A
- Summary of workflow: Idea → Protocol → Search → Screening → Extraction → Analysis → Publishing
- Questions from participants
- Next steps and resources for independent work
