About the event:
Debating in front of a live audience can be daunting for a first time speaker. Practice Makes Perfect offers newcomers to debating the opportunity to learn how to speak and respond under pressure in a safe environment. We do this by announcing the topics we will be debating in advance, but only telling you which topic you will be speaking on and which side you will take on the day of the debate itself.
How does it work?
After taking a week to do some basic research on each of the topics we send you - there aren't many and you don't need to become an overnight expert - we break you up into groups on the day and get you talking about what you've learnt. We then step it up by assigning your group one of the topics and asking you to write down what you think are the best arguments in favour and against, which you will then practice delivering in front of your team-mates with an on-site debate trainer providing regular feedback. Finally, each team will debate their topic in front of the room with one half of the group speaking in favour and the other half speaking against.
When will the topics be announced?
The topics will be emailed to all confirmed guests one week in advance on the 20th June. Anyone who books their place after this date will immediately receive a copy of all the topics too.

About the Free Speech Pizza House:
The restaurant is owned by the family of outspoken journalist Tom Winnifrith, a free speech devotee who will be joining us for this month's practice debate.
