Event description

Description

Practice as Research is a form of academic research which incorporates an element of practice in the methodology or research output. Rather than seeing the relationship between practice and theory as a dichotomy, as has sometimes traditionally been the case, there is a growing body of practice research academics across a number of disciplines, who use practice as part of their research.

In this workshop we will discuss modes of practice as research. Within arts and humanities departments there are ongoing debates about how to define this emerging research phenomenon, and there are a variety of models of practice research (practice-as-research, practice-based, practice-led, mixed-mode research practice and practice through research). We will offer case study examples of practice framed as research. And staff and postgraduates will have the opportunity to work in groups with their own practice and discuss how it can become a research method or output.

The first in the series of Cass Research Workshop events. The series, which covers a range or topics from practice as research to academic writing and book-publishing, is intended for Cass Staff and Postgaduate Students to gain key skills in academic research for artists, designers, writers and architects.
