Course description:

A prequel to the popular PITStop Course focusing on essential diabetes care delivery. The course covers:

• Classification of types of diabetes mellitus and accurate diagnosis (including those at high risk of developing type 2 diabetes)

• Screening for high risk and type 2 diabetes

• Lifestyle messages for type 2 diabetes and those at high risk of developing type 2 diabetes

• The oral hyperglycaemia treatment pathway. Along the way we consider:

· National and local guidelines/formulary

· Individual target setting

· DVLA medical guidelines

· Appropriate blood glucose monitoring

· Hypoglycaemia risk / education / management

• Illness management

• Pre-conceptual advice

• Cardiovascular: lipid, BP and chronic kidney disease screening and management (obesity management – self-directed learning)

  • Eye screening and diabetes-related eye problems

• Foot assessment, recording foot assessment results and appropriate referral

• Identifying the core diabetes services that every practice should be offering patients, including the CCG measurements (BP, cholesterol and HbA1c targets and attendance to structured education) and the National Diabetes Audit 9 care processes

• Considering the care pathways for people at high risk, with type 2 diabetes and housebound patients from a practice perspective.

This is not a basic course; it covers most elements of diabetes care apart from injectable therapies.

The PITStop team recommend membership to the Primary Care Diabetes Society and endorse the www.diabetesonthenet.com suite of CPD online options, including the 6 steps to insulin safety. Registration is free and certificates are issued on completion. We also recommend registering with Trend UK for access to their competency framework and range of patient leaflets.

The course is suitable for Practice Nurses (PN), Nurse Practitioners (NP), Clinical Pharmacists (CP) and GPs already involved, or wanting to get more involved in diabetes care. The course is not for those who have previously completed the PITStop course within the last 3 years. Please nominate 1 delegate per practice.
