Precarious Work: Health & Safety Implications and Ideas For Action
Fri 2 June 2017, 12:30 – 16:00 BST
Precarious work is on the increase. Workers expected to survive on contracts that are temporary or casual in nature, with no guarantees as to hours, which are low paid, and which lack access to employment benefits and important legal protections. These work arrangements have an impact on the health and safety of individuals, whether in the form of increased incidence of workplace injury, work intensification and stress levels, or decreased collective organisation and trade union membership.
During this event, we will discuss actions we can take after exploring the issues with a variety of speakers:
- Stephen Smellie and Ian Fitzpatrick of Unison, speaking about the Social Care Sector;
- Bryan Simpson (Unite) and Sarah Collins (STUC/Betterthanzero) speaking about taking action against Scotland's worst bosses; and
- A representative from Thompsons Solicitors speaking about the law in this area.
Join us for a light lunch from 12:30, with the event running 1pm 'til 4pm. You are then also welcome to stay on for our AGM which will run 'til 17:30.
