What Is GDPR?

General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) is coming into effect on 25th May 2018. GDPR will build on concepts and principles that currently exist through the Data Protection Act.

GDPR is intended to unify legislation put in place by existing EU member states protecting any personal data held by an organisation which can be used to identify an individual. This has raised the privacy bar on personal data. Organisations will be required to locate data, understand its purpose and appropriately secure it, no matter where it is stored or how it is shared. It will change every customer facing organisation, and non-compliance will be heavily penalised.

Who does it apply to?

The new legislation will apply to all organisations (public and private sector) who process personal data and operate in Europe and can also apply to organisations who operate overseas. In other words, if your organisation processes personal data it will apply to you.
