Preparing to Teach GCSE Computing 9 – 1

|With the change in the assessment for GCSE Computing, our training will bring the skills and confidence needed to teach the new specifications in a fun and engaging way. This course is ideally suited to teachers who have been teaching GCSE Computing or those considering teaching it for the first time. It will focus on teaching strategies for the technical topics involved in the new specifications. Delegates will go away with lots of resources to help them through the first year of teaching the course.|
Session 1 - Overview of the course:
- Overview of different boards comparisons looking at exam assessment systems and the role of the Non Exam Assessment
Session 2 - Machine architecture:
- Bits, bytes, binary logic and Boolean algebra
- Parts of a CPU and the Fetch Execute Cycle
- Illustration of CPU operation: sequencing with the Little Man Computer
- New model questions
Session 3 - Computer Systems paper:
- Introduction to networks – LANs, WANs, network topologies. Protocols, MAC and IP addressing
- New model examination questions
Session 4 - Algorithms and Programming paper:
- Effective and efficient algorithms using pseudocode and flowcharts
- How to implement binary, linear searches
- New model examination questions
Session 5 - How to approach non examinations based assessment task:
- Overview of the Non-Examination-Based Assessment Task -Guidance on how to produce documentation what is involved
Darren Travi, Ilia Avroutine and Paul Long
Darren is Head of Computing at the Royal Grammar School in High Wycombe. He is also a CAS Master Teacher and leads the Buckinghamshire CAS Hub. Darren has been teaching A-Level Computer Science since the 1990s and GCSE Computing since the course started in 2010. He has been an active and leading member of Computing At School and has successfully delivered a series of CPD events supporting teachers at Primary and Secondary phase.
Ilia teaches Computer Science at the Royal Grammar School. He has taught A-Level Computer Science for five years, having previously taught Computing in Canada. Ilia co-leads the CAS Bucks Hub and has run a number of training events around the country. He has a wide experience of teaching Computing and has co-authored the new Key Stage 3 Computing textbook for Hodders.
Paul has a first-class honours degree in Computer Science and, in 1997, started teaching Key Stage 3 and GCSE IT and A Level Computer Science. He is a former principal moderator/examiner for OCR’s A-Level ICT course, covering the 2513 structured tasks coursework; and then for their G062 coursework for the first year, before leaving OCR to focus on a consultancy business. Paul has worked in maintained schools for fifteen years, including nine as Head of Department. He has worked alongside the development team for the new AQA GCSE Computer Science specification, and has been a reviewer for the new NEA assessment material. Paul is currently working freelance as a consultant and provides training in ICT and Computer Science.
