Presenting data with impact to facilitate & influence planning outcomes
Overview
* Please note this session is for HPMA members only**
*This session is for those in HR/OD/ Workforce roles**
Summary:
This half-day, online workshop is for anyone who wants to use data to inspire change and influence their stakeholders. Presenting data with impact begins with understanding both the story you want to tell and the audience you’re speaking to. Too often, data presentations overwhelm or bore viewers due to poor alignment between the data and the message. The first step in creating an effective presentation is clarifying your purpose and identifying which data points support your narrative. This sets the foundation for crafting a compelling, relevant story that informs, engages, and influences.
In this workshop, we explore best practices in visual communication—how to choose the appropriate visual form, simplify cluttered data, and use tools like colour and hierarchy to draw attention to key points. Participants will also learn how to avoid common traps like misleading scales or overcomplicated visuals.
But even the best-designed visuals won’t land unless they’re delivered well. The final part of the workshop focuses on the art of telling a story around your data. We’ll cover how to build a strong narrative arc.
Learning Outcomes:
By the end of this workshop, you will:
- Understand why we link data with stories and visuals
- Recognise how to tailor your story and presentation to your stakeholders
- Know the different ways you can use data in a story
- Link data to the story arc to increase buy-in to what you are proposing
- Create a storyboard for your story
- Learn tips and techniques to maximise the impact of your data story
