Presenting Les Ballets Negres, Workshop with Ashanti Harris
Event Information
Description
Les Ballets Negres are known as the first black British dance company. They performed extensively across the UK and Europe between 1946 and 1952. Their choreographies combined ballet and modern dance structures with Caribbean, West African and Eastern dance practices. Many of the dances addressed the surrounding racial politics within the UK and its empire; framing the black experience across history, offering alternative narratives and re-imagining the boundaries of cultural and social norms. This workshop will move between a lecture and a dance class, exploring some of the themes present in the choreographies of Les Ballets Negres.
