Join Peter Wilkinson, Archivist for the National Gasworks Archive, Warrington on this fascinating guided walk. Preston was the first town outside London to have a public gas supply. On this really interesting guided walk you will visit key locations around the city centre including the site of the first gas works, the obelisk where the opening ceremony took place in Feb 1816 , the coal yards and some of the buildings first lit by gas.The walk will start at the Robert Peel Statue, Winckley Square Gardens.
The walk is free of charge but we welcome donations to support the work of Preston Historical Society. Please note participants join the walk at their own risk .
