GPs, Practice Managers and leaders in healthcare are under huge pressure and this can impact on their own health and wellbeing. We spend our working days caring for others, often neglecting our own health and wellbeing needs. Dr Helen Lawal found herself turning towards lifestyle medicine in her own life to address her worsening physical and mental health whilst working as a GP. In this three hour workshop she will share what lifestyle medicine is and how you can apply this evidence based approach in your own life to improve your health and wellbeing.


This workshop covers;

  • Dr Helen Lawal’s personal story, her challenges and battles and how she overcame these
  • Health and wellbeing - why is it so important?
  • What is lifestyle medicine and what is the evidence for it?
  • How can we use lifestyle medicine based interventions and tools in our own life and work to improve our health and wellbeing
  • How can we create health habits to improve our own health and wellbeing


Topics that will be covered include in this interactive workshop include:

  • Nutrition
  • Sleep
  • Physical activity
  • Stress Management – mindfulness
  • Social connectedness


Attendees will leave with;

  • Practical methods to prioritise your own health and wellbeing within your busy life as a GP or healthcare leader
  • Tools, interventions and resources you can use in your own life
  • An understanding that you can share with your team and family to positvely impact their health and wellbeing

Facilitator: Dr Helen Lawal, BSc (Sport and Exercise Science), MBBS, MRCGP, DFSRH

Nigerian born and Yorkshire bred, Dr Helen Lawal is a Portfolio GP who works in the NHS as a Lead GP for Lifestyle Medicine. Helen is a Health Coach at the OneWellness Centre in Harrogate and helps clients to lose weight and create healthy lifestyle habits. She co-presented the Channel 4 series How To Stay Well which aired in 2017 and is now co-presenter of Channel 4’s successful series, Food Unwrapped. Helen was the in-house medical expert on BBC 2’s quiz series, Britain’s Best Junior Doctor. She co-presents the new series of Channel 4’s How To Lose Weight Well.

Helen holds degrees in both Sport and Exercise Science (University of Leeds) and Medicine (Hull-York Medical School) and undertook her GP training at University College London Hospital. Away from medicine Helen is a keen health and lifestyle blogger, loves Yoga, gardening, cooking and practices mindfulness and meditation.


Light refreshments will be provided. All delegates who attend will recieve a certificate of participation, in addition to electronic copies of the slide deck and handouts used as part of the workshop.
