Event Details

Preventing dementia is one of the great challenges of 21st century medicine. Currently, 850,000 people live with dementia in the UK – a figure that will rise to one million by 2025.

Evidence increasingly suggests that the brain changes which cause dementia begin in middle age, and that there may be a critical window during which lifestyle changes and preventative medicines could slow, or stop the disease.

Join the University of Edinburgh’s Centre for Dementia Prevention for an evening of stimulating discussion about how we can all improve our brain health today to manage our risk of dementia in later life. With experts from the Universities of Edinburgh and Oxford, as well as leading figures from the charity sector, it will offer advice and information on how lifestyle, environment and genes all play their part in one of the most challenging health conditions of our time.

The event takes place in the Playfair library in Old College.

Programme for the event:

  • Welcome and introductions – Prof Tara Spires-Jones, Chair of Neurodegeneration, University of Edinburgh
  • Are we nearly there yet? Current priorities in dementia prevention research – Prof Craig Ritchie, Director of the Centre for Dementia Prevention and Henry Simmons, Chief Executive of Alzheimer’s Scotland
  • How lifestyle choices may reduce your risk: environment, activity and medicines – Dr Tom Russ, Co-Director of the Alzheimer’s Scotland Research Centre at the University of Edinburgh; Dr Ivan Koychev, Clinical Lecturer in Psychiatry at the University of Oxford, Prof Craig Ritchie

    Keynote
  • In their lifetime: can today’s youth hope for a future without dementia? – Hilary Evans, Chief Executive of Alzheimer’s Research UK

The talks will be followed by a drinks reception. Our speakers and researchers will be available to answer any questions you may have, and to explain how you can get involved in dementia prevention research.

About the CDP

The Centre for Dementia Prevention combines research in science, medicine and social sciences to lead global efforts in preventing dementia.

At our heart is a vision to bring together researchers, policy makers and members of the public, to achieve three goals:

  • To advance understanding of the basic biology of neurodegeneration
  • To drive global efforts to deliver new medicines that could act before clinical symptoms of dementia appear
  • To improve the experience of living with dementia by developing strategies that increase quality of life

We seek to give people the power to understand and protect their brain health, for a future without dementia.v
