Pride and Prejudice in Words and Music
Overview
To celebrate Jane Austen's 250th birthday, join us for a special evening as her Pride and Prejudice is brought to life through words and music by Sophie Max (Narrator), Leora Cohen (Violin) & Paul Wingfield (Piano) in the perfect location of the wood-panelled music room at Burgh House, a Queen Anne grade 1 listed building. This spell-binding one-woman play with live music is a modern recreation of the 'melodrama', a popular form of nineteenth-century salon entertainment. The narrator performs Gill Hornby's witty and dynamic abridged version of Jane Austen's novel, accompanied throughout by a piano and violin duet. The effervescent and evergreen music was reworked by much-loved composer Carl Davies from his iconic score for the 1995 BBC TV adaptation of Pride and Prejudice, starring Colin Firth and Jennifer Ehle. Our most recent performance of the show at the Jane Austen Festival in the Assembly Room of the Guildhall, Bath, was sold out and received a standing ovation. A perfect prelude to the Christmas and Chanukah periods!
