Description

Led by Judy Grahame

Kindly hosted by Whitechapel Gallery

1.30 – 3.30pm Individual surgery sessions (see below)*

3.45 - 4.15pm CPD network - registration & refreshments

4.15 – 6.00pm Planning for Progression – building skills and confidence

This term’s practical workshop session will focus on planning: how to put together short units of work that allow for the development of children’s skills whilst also building their confidence and generating successful outcomes.

With pressure of time for Art and Design in an overcrowded curriculum, there is ever more need to make sure that we plan meaningful activities that afford children opportunities to develop their skills base, that offer challenges, yet provide them with an opportunity to produce work that differs in outcome from others’. Given the approach in many schools where Art and Design must fit within a cross-curricular theme, it’s important to ensure that real learning is happening, that children are developing familiarity with materials and processes and that their confidence is allowed to grow. The session will be led by Judy Grahame, a primary art and design consultant who has worked with many Tower Hamlets schools, and will include some group activities planning units of work as above, that show development of a skill or process across several lessons.

During the meeting we will hear about other projects that Tower Hamlets primary schools have been involved with during this school year. The afternoon will also include an update on current and forthcoming events at the Whitechapel Gallery from Kirsty Lowry (Curator: Schools and Teachers).

As usual we would love you to share work from your own schools. We hope you’ll bring along work to share especially, but not exclusively, if you took away ideas from the last session or two and developed them with your own classes.

*PLEASE NOTE: in the earlier part of the afternoon (from 1.30pm until 3.30pm) we will run a bookable 30 minute 1:1 surgery session with Judy Grahame for anyone who wishes to ask advice, seek help with schemes of work and curriculum planning or any other Art and Design related issues. These sessions can be booked direct through becca.linton@towerhamlets.gov.uk
