1.30 - 2.45 What’s in a sketchbook?
Developing ideas and developing skills – a guide to good sketchbook use
This practical workshop will help to build teachers’ awareness of how to use sketchbooks – a significant component of the current curriculum for art and design and important in providing purposeful, confidence- building and challenging opportunities for children. The session will be jointly led by Judy Grahame, a primary art and design consultant currently working with Tower Hamlets schools and Andrew Rowland, Year 1 teacher at St Saviour’s Primary School in Poplar, whose sketchbook practice with KS1 pupils is innovative and exemplary. Andrew will share his ideas and we will lead a practical session that will include making ‘little books’ and exploring their use in delivering art and design both discretely and within cross-curricular themes. The session will include drawing (amongst other processes) and will suggest many ways of using and developing ideas in sketchbooks both in and beyond the classroom. It should provide practical strategies that teachers can immediately try out with their own classes.
2.45 – 3.00 Tea / coffee
3.00 - 3.45 Practical Workshop (continued)
More practical activities related to sketchbook use, relevant to different ages and stages. In this session there will also be an opportunity to share work that colleagues have brought with them from their own schools. We hope that you will bring along anything you’d like to share.
