Event description

Description

Target audience: New and inexperienced Y5/6 teachers

Course leader: Alison Bailey, Pathfinder consultant trainer

This session will give new upper KS2 teachers on an overview of the key priorities and most effective teaching approaches for teaching the English curriculum at Y5/6. It will cover:

  • the effective teaching of reading, including the teaching of comprehension skills (including some guidance on text selection and test preparation and ) and ways to build children’s stamina and enjoyment in reading challenging texts;
  • developing children’s understanding of written English and supporting their ability to work through the full writing process with increasing independence in planning, drafting, editing and proof-reading. Particular attention will be given to teaching children to write in more formal registers and the embedding of grammar teaching within this;

These aspects will be considered in the context of age-appropriate, cross-curricular, engaging topics which develop children’s oracy and vocabulary and prepare them to meet the expected standards in English at the end of Y6.

NOTES:
