Preparatory Tasks and Reflections
Talk to your mentor and identify a variety of contexts in which you can communicate with parents and get to know them and the community the school serves. For example:
- parents evenings;
- consultation meetings;
- home visits;
- social events;
- community events.
Arrange a time to talk to your head teacher or a member of senior management about how your school actively works to engage parents and the local community.
Reflecting on your experiences:
- do you think there are issues around parents and community engagement that are specific to urban schools? What are these?
- looking back to the start of the year, have your views changed about your school’s parents and the local community? In what ways?
