Primary Mastery Subject Leaders
Maths Hubs are working in close partnership with the NCETM to support mathematics teaching for mastery. Hubs are supporting schools to experience, experiment with, and implement teaching for mastery approaches in maths lessons, and to develop leadership and professional learning approaches that support teachers and pupils in this pursuit.
Primary Mastery Subject Leaders Training
This training is designed for Primary Maths Subject Leaders. Participants should have the capacity and capability to lead mathematics across Key Stage 1 and 2. They should have the potential to be an outstanding role model. It is also anticipated that participants will take responsibility for developing and improving the teaching of maths across their own school and possibly within Local Clusters. This programme will focus on teaching maths for mastery in line with the national priority. It will support participant’s ability to lead and influence others.
Outline of the programme
Session 1 - Introduction to Mastery; the features of mastery pedagogy. Understanding the five big ideas and use of Representation and Structure.
Session 2 - Variation (procedural and conceptual). Use of Bar Modelling.
Session 3 – Mathematical Thinking (reasoning). Use of Maths Journals.
Session 4 – Resources to support Mastery. Collaborative planning of a unit of work; planning a coherent journey.
Session 5 – Maths Leadership; identifying areas of Leadership in order to support others and lead change effectively.
Outcomes of the programme
Delegates will have opportunity to:
Enhance their subject knowledge
Gain an understanding of the recommended methods for teaching for mastery
Explore and develop appropriate pedagogy and resources
Develop leadership skills and attributes to influence others
Develop in collaboration with the rest of the Primary Mastery Subject Leaders, training to cascade within their own school
Take collective responsibility for reaching more teachers through the work of the Maths Hub

Schools that wish to participate in the training must commit to the following:
The mastery maths leader will be released to attend five separate full-day training days on:
Session 1 – 1st November 2016
Session 2 – 6th December 2016
Session 3 – 30th January 2017
Session 4 – 28th March 2017
Session 5 – 23rd May 2017
All sessions will take place at Harrogate Grammar School, 9:30 – 4:30.
Any professional development gap tasks between the training sessions
Primary Mastery Subject Leaders will be fully supported by senior leadership as they lead the gap tasks between each session.
Costs for participation
The main cost of the training is being funded by The Yorkshire Ridings Maths Hub. Therefore the five days training will cost only £125 per participant for the full 5 days.
