If you have received an email invitation confirming you have been shortlisted for interview please book a place above. You must then read below for details how to prepare for your interview.


YOU MUST READ THE IMPORTANT INFORMATION BELOW TO ASSIST YOUR INTERVIEW PREPARATION

The timeline below is for guidance only and you should note the date you have booked may have a different start time.

  • 15 Minute Introduction to the PGCE Teacher Training Programme.

  • 45 Minute written task that will be to assess your literacy and knowledge of teaching practice.

  • Remainder time: During this period you will present a teaching exercise from the list below and have an individual interview with a course tutor to discuss your application and merits for the course.

Subject Specific Task for PGCE PGCE Primary or PGCE Early Years Interview

You should read the National Curriculum specification for Primary and Early Years, and make sure you are able to make a convincing case about how your subject knowledge and school experience equips you to teach the subject for which you are applying.

If you have any questions about what is required then you should contact the course leader for your subject as shown below.

Presentations

The topics to choose for your presentation are shown below. You should prepare a 5 minute presentation on one of these topics and avoid using ICT (i.e. do not use PowerPoint or other presentation software). This is an oral presentation that is an opportunity for you to demonstrate your communication skills as well as your understanding of the topic you have chosen. Please make sure you are well prepared and have practised the presentation before you deliver it. If you wish you may to provide a supportive materials for people to refer to. The presentation will be made to the tutor assessing your application.

1. Unseen Children – Access and Achievement 20 Years On.

This landmark Ofsted report (2013) drew attention to the failings of the education system in tackling the disproportionate underachievement of disadvantaged children. What were the main findings and recommendations of the report for the Primary sector?

2. Parents as partners in learning.

The Tickell Review (2011) called for a much greater emphasis on working with parents to involve them in children’s early learning and development. The review states that, ’Parents are a child’s first and most enduring educators.’ How does this impact upon schools?

3. What is the purpose of Early Years and Primary education?

The earliest stages of a child’s education has been a topic of increased scrutiny in recent years. Is the time spent in Early Years about supporting children’s full development in all areas, preparing children for school or is it valuable in its own right?

4. Male teachers

The number of males applying to become Primary teachers has improved in recent years but still remains well below the number of women applicants.

Why should this be the case and is it important to recruit males to the Early Years and Primary settings?

5. British Values

The Department for Education Teacher’s Standards requires teachers to conduct themselves in a professional manner which does not ‘undermine fundamental British values’. What does this mean and what are the implications for the teaching profession?

FAQs

What are my transport/parking options getting to the event?

Use of public transport is strongly recommended. Holloway Road Tube station (Picadilly Line) is located directly outside The University. There are also good bus services on Holloway Road. Parking is very restricted and likely to be expensive for a full day.

I applied to a school why am I invited to London Metropolitan for my interview?

Our partner schools (Cardinal Pole, Aylward Academy, Princess May Primary and Orchard Primary) all work with London Met who accredit their Teacher Training Programs. This means that you will attend the University for the interviews with applicants from all routes. Teachers from the schools may also attend and support the interview process.
