Primitive Grids: A Workshop with James Langdon and Peter Nencini

Millennia before Le Corbusier’s Ville Radieuse, the archetypal modernist grid, human civilisation followed more contingent arrangements of geographical and material resources. Settlements clustered around rivers, woodland and other sites of energy, shelter and provision.
We still observe these principles in our everyday gestures. When we place a cup down on a crowded table, or instinctively choose our footing on a rocky path. Sometimes things belong where they fit. This workshop will project these concepts — of formal and informal grids — onto compositional exercises in display and drawing. We will explore simple design decision-making in relation to broader principles of organisation.
Peter Nencini worked across print and television for organisations such as the New York Times, BBC, Channel 4, Levi’s Europe and Théâtre National de Toulouse after graduating from the Royal College of Art. Recent commissions for Galerie für Zeitgenössische Kunst Leipzig, Walker Art Center Minneapolis and Wallpaper* / Salone del Mobile Milan have resulted in architectural models, prostheses for furniture, pedagogical apparatus, props for performance – narrative forms that oscillate between the typo- and the picto-graphic. He teaches at Norwich University of the Arts. Recent works include; ‘Weltall, Erde, Mensch’, Galerie für Zeitgenössische Kunst, Leipzig (2014); ‘A School of Design Fiction’, with James Langdon, Galerie für Zeitgenössische Kunst, Leipzig (2013); ‘Typography Summer School’, The Drawing Room, London (2013); ‘Penser / Classer’ L’École Supérieure d’Art et Design, Valence, (2013), ‘Secondment’, Beginnings NYC, New York, (2013). In 2013 he codesigned ‘The Artist and The Engineer’ Eastside Projects’ User’s Manual Draft #6.
James Langdon is a founding Director of Eastside Projects. He designs and edits many of the organization’s publications and is responsible for creating a series of experimental manuals. In 2013, Langdon founded the itinerant School for Design Fiction, working with students to investigate the storytelling inherent in the design process, the emotions embedded within an artifact, and the benefits of living in speculative worlds. As a curator, Langdon organized Arefin & Arefin: The Graphic Design of Tony Arefin (Ikon Gallery), Book Show (Eastside Projects) and a restaging of Norman Potter’s In:quest of Icarus at the Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam. Langdon has been guest lecturer at schools around the world, including Werkplaats Typografie (Arnhem), Jan van Eyck Academie (Maastricht), and Konstfack (Stockholm). He is the recipient of the 2012 Inform International Award for Conceptual Design, presented by Galerie für Zeitgenössische Kunst, Germany.’
