Event description

Description

Over 8 sessions you will develop a personal textile print project learning how to print onto fabric using a combination of paper and photographic silk screen stencils and mono printing. Working from personal imagery, drawings and collage you will develop a sketchbook of ideas, make hand cut paper stencils, design and use a permanent photographic silk screen stencil.

(Please note that the course will not include making a photographic silk screen stencil at Phoenix Art Space but will tutor you in different ways to make suitable artwork for this purpose - Deborah will then turn your artwork into a photo screen at her home studio for you to use throughout the course)

There will be time to develop your design ideas through silk-screen printing, learn how to mix textile inks and play with composition, colour, pattern and overprinting. Throughout the course you will be shown the work of inspirational artists and designers and work towards a final printed textile piece such as a length of fabric, scarve, bag, t-shirt or tea towel, or a series of experimental samples.

Printed Textiles 2 is suitable for both beginners, continuing students and those with previous experience. It is part of a three term course which builds on different textile print and dye techniques and design approaches, but can be taken on its own. Previous students have used the course to rekindle their creative practice, build a textile portfolio for university arts applications, learn new skills and meet like-minded people.

Most materials are supplied although students will need to bring the following materials along:

Plain white or lightly coloured linen/cotton 2 meters minimum (which could be a repurposed piece of cloth such as a sheet or unpicked garment)
Or plain cotton/linen tote bags, blank t-towels or other blank textiles
Off cuts or calico for test prints
Fabric scissors
Black opaque pens (as advised during course)

Costs: £160
Days: 8 Monday evenings
Times: 18:00 - 21:00
Dates: 20 January - 9 March
Room: Red
Maximum: 8

Deborah Manson studied Illustration at Central Saint Martin’s College of Art and went on to work as a designer. In 2004 she qualified as a teacher and taught graphic communication. In 2016 she gained an MA in Textiles from Chelsea College of Art. She works from her studio in Sussex where she makes hand dyed and printed textiles using natural and sustainable approaches to design. Whether working with paper or textiles she enjoys the interplay of colour, shape and the spaces in-between. Her work reflects her interest in the cross overs between art, craft and design. She teaches courses and workshops in Sussex and beyond.
