MONDAY 14 JANUARY

SHORT FORM: MORE THAN A CALLING CARD?

We’ll be getting stuck into the function and capital of the short film. Looking to the various routes a short filmmaker can take with their career, we weigh up content creation against the perceived inevitability of transitioning to features, and look to the practical opportunities for career development short form uniquely offers.

Join BAFTA-nominated LFS alumni Olivier Kaempfer (The Miseducation of Cameron Post) in conversation with LSFF’s Philip Ilson. Kaempfer will share insight into his career as a producer of both shorts and features, divulging the practicalities and sustainability of moving between the two, as well as chatting about founding his own independent production house, Parkville Pictures.

WHO GOES WHERE? THE ETHICS OF REPRESENTATION IN DOCUMENTARY

We look into the ethics of representation and ethics of production in documentary as an inextricable cycle, addressing documentary’s legacy of ethnography and its distillation into modern documentary practice. Our panellists will address the thin line between ‘subject’ and ‘object’; who is looking at who from both behind and in front of the camera and what might constitute a meaningful dialogue between the two.

Found footage filmmaking is as ubiquitous as ever, but as contemporary understandings of the archive shift in a digital age, where does the law figure? Is everything up for grabs? And just how do we gain access to these seemingly impenetrable archives, both physical and online? We interrogate the legality and ethics of making film with digital and analogue archive footage with its keepers and creatives.

HOW TO WRITE WOMEN POST-#METOO

This event looks to take stock of the #MeToo movement, and the potential it has to effect change. This will be a space where women can discuss the pitfalls of current female representation, and whether heightened consciousness of sexism within the industry will bleed it’s way into representation on-screen. We’ll strive to work together to realise practical solutions to bolster women’s on-screen presence.

MEANINGFUL THOUGHTS: gal-dem Film Criticism Workshop

An interactive workshop in partnership with gal-dem that looks to nurture the next generation of women of colour critics. Under the watchful eye of one of the gal-dem team, participants will be guided through the review process, collectively watching a short film and talking through their ideas to form a critical piece. We invite you to collectively share, discuss and work through your ideas in an encouraging environment.
