“This year, we’ve tried to make the industry programme a little different. Offering you all of the staple panels that will help you get short film funded, made and seen, we’ve added even more events to renew your faith in what the industry can achieve and where you can position yourself in it. We’ve brought together experts from every corner of the film world to offer you a helping hand, wherever you’re at in your career.

Happy Hours will offer limited complementary free drinks and anyone can attend to network, discuss the day’s events and most importantly, have a good time!”

MONDAY 14 JANUARY

SHORT FORM: MORE THAN A CALLING CARD?
2PM-3.30PM

We’ll be getting stuck into the function and capital of the short film. Looking to the various routes a short filmmaker can take with their career, we weigh up content creation against the perceived inevitability of transitioning to features, and look to the practical opportunities for career development short form uniquely offers.

PANELLISTS: Jo Duncombe (British Council), Jordan McGarry (Film London), Eloise King (Director, Producer, i-D,VICE, BBC), Nikola Vasakova (Girls In Film)

LONDON FILM SCHOOL MASTERCLASS WITH OLIVIER KAEMPFER
4PM-5.30PM
Join BAFTA-nominated LFS alumni Olivier Kaempfer (The Miseducation of Cameron Post) in conversation with LSFF’s Philip Ilson. Kaempfer will share insight into his career as a producer of both shorts and features, divulging the practicalities and sustainability of moving between the two, as well as chatting about founding his own independent production house, Parkville Pictures.

HAPPY HOUR WITH BRITISH COUNCIL
5.30PM-6.30PM

TUESDAY 15 JANUARY

THE MECHANICS OF PROGRAMMING
2PM-3.30PM

A step-by-step guide to programming, we’ve brought together programmers from all niches of the industry specialising in curation for different platforms and on different scales. Taking you through the nitty-gritty of the programming process, you’ll leave with a practical understanding of what it takes to be a programmer.

PANELLISTS: Anna Bogutskaya (BFI), Chiara Marañón (MUBI), Muffin Hix (Fringe! Queer Film & Arts Fest), Tom Grimshaw (LSFF)

THE CURRENCY OF THE MUSIC VIDEO
4PM-5.30PM
Post-MTV and into the era of the ‘concept album’, what is the cultural capital of the music video? We will discuss how we might define the music video now, seeming to straddle the worlds of both corporate content and bolder, more experimental leanings towards moving image, and their ‘worth’ in a digital climate and portfolio of a jobbing director.

PANELLISTS: Tash Tung (Filmmaker, Gazelle Twin, Sega Bodega), Daniella Manca (Caviar), Amar Ediriwira (4:3), Elizabeth Doonan (Sony)

HAPPY HOUR WITH THE VIDEO SHOW
5.30PM-6.30PM

WEDNESDAY 16 JANUARY

BIG FISHES: GETTING YOUR SHORT FILM FUNDED
2PM-3.30PM

Our always popular panel of the industry’s gatekeepers discuss short film funding, commissioning and the who’s and how’s. Geared towards mid-career short filmmakers looking to score bigger budgets, come prepped with Qs for practical advice on pitching and application processes.

PANELLISTS: Charlie Phillips (The Guardian), Catherine Bray (Random Acts), Cordelia Hebblethwaite (BBC), Caragh Davison (BFI Network)

ROADS LESS TRAVELLED: ALTERNATIVE SHORT FILM FUNDING
4PM-5.30PM

We look to shed light on the alternative routes into getting your short film funded for those first time or early career filmmakers with ambitious projects and limited resources. Get deeper into the priorities and mechanisms of these less conventional funds and securing that vital $$$.

PANELLISTS: Steven Eastwood (Stuart Croft Foundation), Gavin Humphries (NOWNESS), Greta Hewinson (FLAMIN), Francesca Fowler (Bumble Female Film Force)

HAPPY HOUR WITH SHEFFIELD DOC/FEST
5.30PM-6.30PM

THURSDAY 17 JANUARY

WHO GOES WHERE? THE ETHICS OF REPRESENTATION IN DOCUMENTARY
2PM-3.30PM

We look into the ethics of representation and ethics of production in documentary as an inextricable cycle, addressing documentary’s legacy of ethnography and its distillation into modern documentary practice. Our panellists will address the thin line between ‘subject’ and ‘object’; who is looking at who from both behind and in front of the camera and what might constitute a meaningful dialogue between the two.

PANELLISTS: Samir Karahoda (Dokufest), Leon Oldstrong (Filmmaker), Joanna Natasegara (Producer), Dr. Pratap Rughani (LCC)

MASTERCLASS: FINDING (FOUND) FOOTAGE
4PM-5.30PM

Found footage filmmaking is as ubiquitous as ever, but as contemporary understandings of the archive shift in a digital age, where does the law figure? Is everything up for grabs? And just how do we gain access to these seemingly impenetrable archives, both physical and online? We interrogate the legality and ethics of making film with digital and analogue archive footage with its keepers and creatives.

PANELLISTS: Sarah Wood (Filmmaker, The Stanley Kubrick Archive Artist-in-Residence), Sarah Brown (Filmmaker), Simon McCallum (BFI Archive), Bartolomeo Meletti (Copyright Expert)

HAPPY HOUR WITH LONDON FILM SCHOOL
5.30PM-6.30PM

FRIDAY 18 JANUARY

HOW TO WRITE WOMEN POST-#METOO
2PM-3.30PM

This event looks to take stock of the #MeToo movement, and the potential it has to effect change. This will be a space where women can discuss the pitfalls of current female representation, and whether heightened consciousness of sexism within the industry will bleed it’s way into representation on-screen. We’ll strive to work together to realise practical solutions to bolster women’s on-screen presence.

PANELLISTS: Olivia Hetreed (Writers’ Guild of Great Britain), Laura Kirwan-Ashman (Filmmaker), Alice Guilluy (London Film Academy)

MEANINGFUL THOUGHTS: gal-dem Film Criticism Workshop
4PM-5.30PM

An interactive workshop in partnership with gal-dem that looks to nurture the next generation of women of colour critics. Under the watchful eye of one of the gal-dem team, participants will be guided through the review process, collectively watching a short film and talking through their ideas to form a critical piece. We invite you to collectively share, discuss and work through your ideas in an encouraging environment.
