Join us for the Private view of Hannah Pittman's intricate exhibition, Objects of Pain, featuring as part of the London Design Festival.
Objects of Pain is a practice-research study exploring how jewellery and wearable artefacts can materialise narratives of chronic pain, preciousness, and wellbeing. The exhibition showcases handcrafted pieces created in dialogue with individuals living with chronic pain, revealing how objects can embody resilience and express lived experience.
Each artefact began with a conversation. Through semi-structured interviews, participants shared reflections on preciousness, attachment, ritual, and wellbeing. Their memories, metaphors, and moments of strength informed the design of contemporary amulets - personal, symbolic, and emotionally resonant. Handmade using a combination of traditional jewellery techniques and digital processes, these works translate lived experiences into tactile and visual language. Alongside the objects, anonymised and annotated excerpts from the interviews offer glimpses into the words and images that shaped their making.
Created by Hannah Louise Pittman as part of her MA in Academic Practice at the University of the Arts London, the project draws on her own 15-year experience of chronic pain. Rather than seeking to represent pain, it honours its complexity and the resilience of participants, inviting viewers to consider how objects might serve as vessels for care, connection, and solidarity - quiet companions in the ongoing strength of living with pain.
