Probing the fundamentals of electrode reactions for energy storage and conversion

For the storage of electricity from intermittent renewable sources, the electro-mobility aiming at the replacement of internal combustion engines, or the power sources for portable electronic devices, etc., the large variety of interfacial electrode / electrolyte processes are the heart of the systems. The demand, and the need, for electrochemical energy storage and electrocatalytic converters are constantly growing and will continue to grow in the future; this makes nowadays electrochemistry as a vibrant and dynamic field of research.

Besides issues related to costs, the complicated integration of practical electrochemical systems into grids and devices, the safety and recyclability of implemented systems, as examples, tremendous efforts are spent in the empirical search of more efficient electrode materials. In parallel, this drives also incentives to gain more fundamental insights on the electrode processes. In particular, a depiction of the relationships between the structural characteristics and the properties of electrode materials provides the corner-stone for resolving the mechanistic aspects of the electrode processes, and data to benchmark theoretical models. To push the limits of accuracy back down to the atomic scale level in experimental measurements allows for testing the limits of the general hypotheses framing our current understanding of the electrochemical reactions for energy conversion and energy storage.

After a rapid overview of the different electrode processes for the energy-related topic, I will discuss progresses in rationalizing the electrode properties for the electrocatalysis on noble metal electrodes, on one side, and of the pseudocapacitive charge storage in transition metal oxides, on the other side, with selected examples from our recent experimental results and the help of theoretical models. Historically, the fields of electrochemical energy storage and electrocatalytic conversion are two independent communities, interacting little with each other, but I will attempt to demonstrate that mutual benefits can be gained when practices, concepts and results from both fields are inspected.

The presenter

Sylvain’s research works focus on the fundamentals of electrode properties for energy-related topic. He studied biology and chemistry at the University of Poitiers (France), and received his PhD degree in physical chemistry in 2008 also at the University of Poitiers. Since 2009 he conducts his research at the Institute of Surface Chemistry and Catalysis (Ulm, Germany). His main scientific approach consists in the preparation and the detailed characterization of well-defined materials, followed by a probing of their electrochemical and electrocatalytic properties upon the combination of various experimental methods.
