‘Problem solve differently: An introduction to Action Learning’

Whether you’ve taken part in – or even heard of - ‘action learning’ before, why not come along to this session and find out about our new initiative?

In 2022 we will be offering members of the Community the chance to join an Action Learning set.

Action Learning is run by a trained facilitator, in a structured way that helps to generate thoughtful questions, clarity, and innovative solutions about challenges you may be facing in relation to your Healthy Ageing project. In between sessions, known as action learning sets, those taking part are expected to put the ideas into practice.

This taster session is your chance to come along and understand more about both the concept of Action Learning and how it really works in practice.

Following this one off taster session there will then be an opportunity for you to join a set in 2022 – so why not join us on Tuesday 30 November and see if it’s for you?

We hope you can join us at the interactive session. If you have any questions please contact the Community of Practice team , cop@ageing-better.org.uk

ACTION LEARNING: TESTIMONIALS

“I am a complete convert both to Action Learning in general and to virtual Action Learning. I initially thought I would find AL frustrating - what I wanted was advice wasn’t it? In fact, it is much more productive to have the time to reflect on the possible solutions myself and to be asked useful and searching questions which help me find my own way to an answer.

I expected the technology to be a hindrance, but I got used to it in a few minutes and it works really well.

It has been incredibly useful to have a space to explore ideas and problems in a very supportive group. It’s also very helpful to have a group to report back to – this makes me ensure that I action the tasks I set myself in time for the next session.

I really recommend ALS to anyone who feels that they need extra support in their work, especially if you feel a bit isolated and alone with all your responsibilities.”

Sarah Vaughan Roberts, CEO of a Social Enterprise

Being part of an action learning set helped me recognise and face up to the root cause of some of the business issues I faced. The questions helped me gain insights from different perspectives that I was unable to see for myself. The time I invested has easily paid back by being able to see a clear way forward and make progress without procrastinating or putting things off. Being part of an action learning set has been an illuminating experience for me. I have gained valuable insights from different perspectives and have been supported in taking some challenging steps to develop the future of my business.

Judith Wardell, Time of Your Life, participant in an open ALS

I started the action learning set as someone who, from a professional perspective, was often asked questions because there was an expectation that I would have ready answers to them. As a result, I found the early part of the process quite challenging as by default I would try to immediately answer the questions posed, preventing a deeper level of thinking and consideration of a wider range of possibilities. The further I got into my ALS journey, the more I learned to let questions hang, sometimes not answering them until a few days later, leading to more considered actions and solutions. Without Fiona leading that process and challenging me to do so, I wouldn't have progressed as far as I did and it has made me reflect further on how I would like the teams I manage to challenge each other and themselves in the future.

Jonny Rudd, Director (Charity sector)

"I have loved the journey AL had taken me on. Every session has been of great value, and allowed me that time and introspection with healthy, thoughtful questioning from my peers. It is such a rare opportunity to have that time, and I would encourage anyone who gets the chance to take full advantage of AL. AL has allowed me the ability to recognise my strengths and identify the things that scare me, ultimately leading to my procrastination. Loved every minute of it".

Everyone has the right to a good life as they get older and our whole society benefits when they do. But far too many people face huge barriers that prevent them from doing so. As a result, many older people are living in bad housing, dealing with poverty and poor health and made to feel invisible in their communities and society.

Ageism, including discrimination in employment, stark inequalities in people’s health and financial circumstances, chronic underinvestment in helping people to age well and a lack of political focus – are all contributing to this growing and critical problem.

At the Centre for Ageing Better we are pioneering ways to make ageing better a reality for everyone. We aim to inspire and inform those in power to tackle the inequalities faced by older people, call out and challenge ageism in all its forms and encourage the widespread take-up of brilliant ideas and approaches that help people to age better.

Get it right and more of us can experience good health, financial security and be treated fairly and with respect as we grow older.

Help us make sure everyone can age better.
